The threat of climate change in the DDR
The meteorological conditions, in the short term, and the climate, in the medium and long term, have a great influence on the growth and physiological development of the vine, its phenology, productivity, the quality attributes of the grapes and must, as well as the typicality of the wine produced and the suitability of the varieties and cultural practices.
The Iberian Peninsula, and in particular the Douro Vinhateiro, is among the regions most exposed to climate change, with significant upward trends in temperatures, decreased precipitation, increased evapotranspiration and aridity.
As the vine is particularly sensitive to atmospheric conditions, viticulture is consequently very vulnerable to climate changes, representing a major challenge for the sector, which will necessarily imply the definition of adaptation strategies.
In addition, efforts are also being made to mitigate anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases, contributing, as a whole, to carbon neutrality and to environmental and socioeconomic sustainability.
